Ensuring data security on the cloud

Ensuring data security on the cloud

Sheena Wong

You might find yourself in this situation – using cloud technology for data backup and file recovery while being nervous about its security implications.

In the past, the majority of sensitive business data was hosted at a classic Data Centre supported by server hardware, network appliances, cabling, power units and other environmental controls. To cater to the needs of remote working and on-demand network access, many enterprises have shifted towards cloud computing, which provides greater convenience, flexibility and data availability.

Information Security Manager, Victor Ho provided his guidance on cloud security.

What are the security risks of cloud computing?

There is always the risk of breach or loss for every piece of data uploaded to the cloud. This is why we need to adopt and implement proper security measures to counter risks such as malicious insider attacks, data breaches, stolen credentials or account hijacking, system vulnerabilities and unauthorised attempts to access important data.

Another critical area to consider is the selection of Cloud Service Provider (CSP). Without proper data separation between different tenants in a multi-cloud arena, it will pose an opportunity for attackers to exploit the available attack surface. A mature CSP should comply with stringent security standards and organise regular risk assessments and security audits to identify and tackle these vulnerabilities.

What is our cloud security strategy?

Gamuda adopts a hybrid mode of using several cloud-based business suites such as Office365, SharePoint Online (Microsoft Azure) and SAP system (AWS) while maintaining our on-premise Data Centre to host our organisational data.

Group IT Department has always performed robust due diligence on the CSP before subscribing to their services. We have also embarked on Group-wide implementation of multifactor authentication (MFA) and data encryption to protect the true user identity and valuable business information.

More importantly, for individuals using cloud computing, it is encouraged to follow cybersecuritiy’s fundamental and basic practices. As we have repeatedly reminded – always use a strong password combination, secure your home network, keep your gadgets updated with the latest security patches, do not share passwords, avoid using free public Wi-Fi, and avoid clicking any suspicious links within unknown emails.

It is also essential to ensure the use of secure and encrypted web communication protocol (HTTPS) to access sensitive personal information, especially when you shop online and use internet banking services.

Building memories

Joyce Shamini

In a conversation with Chung

Chung Heng Joon is a construction man at heart. Graduating with a Diploma in Building Engineering graduate 1988, he has never stopped building since. In the past 33 years, he had been in projects notorious for their technical complexities, such as hospital wards and laboratory construction, and amassed an impressive portfolio. His rich experiences eventually landed him a position as Section Foremen at the MRT Hospital Kuala Lumpur station.

Running parallel to his lifetime occupation is his long-term preoccupation with photography. Starting with film cameras in the 80s to now a proud DSLR and mirrorless camera owner, he had mesmerised many with an acute eye for beauty. Chung specialises in macro shots, street and landscapes photography, but his construction-themed pictures were what caught the attention of many.

His rare take on construction is refreshing, challenging the stereotypes of ‘ugly’ construction and offering a glimpse of its intrinsic beauty. Unsurprisingly, many of his construction-themed pictures earned top spots at various club photography contests.

Chung Heng Joon’s shot of the Saloma Link Bridge earned a mention from the official Malaysia Photography Club page

Elaborating on his favourite picture of a worker on the bottom half of a secant bore pile steel cage, he gleefully shared how he used a wide-angle lens to turn an everyday scene into something extraordinary

When asked about his step-by-step approach to taking a picture, Chung described it as solving a puzzle. He starts by constructing a mental image of how he wants the picture to turn out before tackling the technicalities involved. This problem-solving approach is reflected in his work ethic. His mentee, site engineer Melvin Ho shared, “When a subcontractor is underperforming, Chung is the kind of person that would take charge of the situation, offer solutions rather than shift blames. That is something I admire him for,” he added. Echoing his sentiment, we are deeply inspired too by Chung’s excellent output at work and photography.

Access to education for all

Access to education for all

Yuevern Loh

“An investment in knowledge pays the best interest”

According to UNICEF, over five million children in Malaysia were unable to attend any in-school education due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This led to them losing interest in their studies from the lack of motivation and stagnancy of not attending classes for a prolonged period.

This situation became worse for students who had poor or no internet access, especially the Orang Asli children. With the lockdowns stretching intermittently for the past one and a half years, schools have seen a decline in attendance due to students lacking proper devices to attend online classes such as laptops, tablets and stable internet connection.

In July, Gamudians came together to launch GL Cares, an initiative to aid those who need help in getting food essentials. At the same time, the Gamuda Parks team supported Orang Asli children from SK (A) Bukit Cheding and SK (A) Bukit Kemandol located nearby Gamuda Cove by providing 165 tablets and broadband access for one year. The aim is to ensure the students attend online classes without depending on their parents’ devices and subsequently, ignite their interest in education.

Additional English and Mathematics after-school classes are also being provided virtually to help them get back on track with their lessons after missing out nearly full year of school.

With the belief that everyone has the right to access to education, 34 special needs students are taught by qualified teachers who have the experience teaching down syndrome, cerebral palsy, ADHD, dyslexia and autism students. These classes are are conducted in a safe manner.

Ever since the daily classes started in early September, we have seen an increase in attendance from the students in their school and healthy participation during the additional classes.

With interactive classes that incorporate dancing and singing, students actively participate and get help with their school work via these additional classes.

The teachers from SK (A) Bukit Kemandol received the tablets on behalf of the students

Moving forward, plans include providing lessons to students on singing, arts and crafts, photography and music. This aims to foster new hobbies, improve their social skills, and explore new experiences.

Interactive virtual classes are held daily via Google Meet

Furthering our ESG journey

Furthering our ESG journey

Ong Jee Lian and Sheena Wong

Since publishing our first Sustainability Statement in 2016, we have taken huge strides and achieved progress in disclosing our environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters.

The pressure for ESG disclosure often mounts with a mixture of anxiety and enthusiasm. We must consider these ESG-driven questions in everything we do – what are the risks? How do we measure and manage them? Where should we focus? And, what opportunities have we identified to create value in new ways?

As we look back at the first three quarters of 2021, ESG has become mainstream for Gamudians. We held a series of aggressive communication programmes on the topic and started the year with Group-wide online training to bolster ESG understanding across departments. As a result, fruitful discussions arose with feasible ESG ideas and working teams were established.

This led to a crucial milestone in June – the crystallisation of a comprehensive ESG framework with the Gamuda Green Plan 2025 (GGP 2025). Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) were identified to spearhead our sustainability initiatives under GGP 2025 to enable more informed and effective decision-making.

The adoption of renewable energy (RE) is a key focus of GGP 2025. The solar power space is a large area for RE generation. There are ample opportunities for Gamuda to leverage on this growing clean energy space to deliver the greatest impact in decarbonising our electricity grid and fostering public-private partnership to raise Malaysia’s RE generation mix.

In support of a low carbon economy as outlined in our GGP 2025, various carbon reduction strategies and resource efficient programmes have been implemented at our developments. To learn more about our ESG progress and achievements throughout the year, read our Sustainability Report 2021 here.

Not forgetting the S in ESG – measuring the social impacts of our socio-economic development programmes is also a crucial material matter for the Group as we engage with a range of important stakeholders throughout our business operation and project delivery.

This year, we continued our participation in the global sustainability index agencies that rate companies by their ESG performance, namely Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), FTSE4Good Bursa Malaysia Index and MSCI ESG Ratings, which we saw an improvement in our ratings from the previous year.

To continue our progress in ESG apects, more sustainability related learning modules are now included in the training calendar by Gamuda Learning Centre (GLC).

In spurring the interest of ESG knowledge among staff, the concluded Stage 1 of Climate Action Change (CAC) programme from April to August was effective in sustaining a continuous learning environment. Subsequently, to promote action on ESG, Stage 2 of the CAC Programme will start in November to drive behavioural and cultural change at both our workplace and home.

Spotlight on renewable energy

Primarily driven by GGP 2025, the Group is making significant forays into RE with an ambitious initial target to develop over 300MW of our own RE assets in the next five years. We are accelerating our growth in this area through active and strategic engagements with market players, policymakers, and potential strategic partners both locally and internationally.

Gamuda’s RE venture can be divided into two streams: internal needs and external opportunities. In the immediate term, Gamuda Land Quayside Mall’s rooftop PV, currently under the design and construction stage, will achieve commissioning by the first quarter of 2022. Other rooftop solar projects planned in the pipeline include Gamuda Digital IBS, Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club, and more. On the external front, we are eyeing a larger scale of asset play for business growth through strategic engagement with potential land owners and partners to co-develop RE assets such as solar farms.

In recent years, RE has been taking the world by storm without sparring Malaysia, mainly driven by the increasing awareness of climate change and ESG investing. For Malaysia, solar and hydropower are the two most viable renewable sources. We see tremendous potentials for strategic play in the RE realm as the Group heads towards a low carbon business pathway.

New learning modules

Developing our people and aligning the learning with business goals is vital to ensure the implementation of GGP 2025.

On a broader scale, we incorporated ESG awareness learning modules for all employees across the Group to instil the fundamental understanding of ESG topics.

Going deeper, we formulated new training opportunities related to ESG expertise, such as sustainable planning, natural resources and waste management, climate science, social impacts and governance.

In tandem with our business demands, there are also certification courses for colleagues working in relevant areas that are recognised by professional agencies or regulatory bodies, such as Department of Environment (DoE), Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association Malaysia (REHDA), SIRIM, ISCA and more.

All Gamudians are encouraged to attend the new learning modules to gain a holistic understanding and build capacity on ESG. Stay tuned to the release of the Gamuda Learning Centre training calendar for 2022!

Sterling report card from British Safety Council

STERLING REPORT CARD FOR MGKT ONCE AGAIN FROM BRITISH SAFETY COUNCIL (BSC) Five-STAR AUDIT

Adam Anand Row

As the MRT Putrajaya Line project nears completion, the MMC Gamuda KVMRT (MGKT) team has once again been recognised with an impressive result in the British Safety Council (BSC) Five-Star Audit, recording a resounding score of 98.1 percent for 2021. It marks an impressive four year run of maintaining a Five-Star rating in the BSC audit, starting from back in 2018, and caps a track record of industry-leading safety performance for the underground works of the project.

Internationally recognised, the BSC audit requires the organisation to undergo a comprehensive, quantified and robust evaluation of its occupational health and safety policies, processes and practices. An organisation’s performance is measured against key health and safety management best practice indicators with a detailed review of over 60 component elements.

To put further this achievement in perspective, a Three-Star rating is equivalent to attaining the ISO 45001:2018 standard while Five-Star requires ‘International Best Practices’ to be met year–on–year, making it hard enough to achieve in the first instance and even harder to maintain every year. Much praise is, therefore, due to the MGKT team for consistently setting, maintaining and going beyond international safety standards at every level throughout the life of the project.

Leaning in for digital engineering

Leaning in for digital engineering

Joyce Shamini

Already BIM Level 2 certified since 2019, the KVMRT Underground (UG) team were some of the earliest Digital Engineering (DE) and BIM adopters in the region recognised for their award-winning in-house solutions.

One breakthrough success was the BIMAR application,  an app that  allows real-world visualisation of  BIM design models on-site using Augmented Reality technology.  Captured in real time, the  app  will enable users to instantly  spot clashes or errors, thus preventing costly mistakes or reworks.

This spirit of innovation had spread quickly in the Group. Today,  BIM Coordinator, Naresh Kumar,  and  Software Programmer, Li Meng Cheng, are working closely with Gamuda Land to implement a similar  BIMAR 2.0 variation of the app  for  building projects.

Testing out the AR-powered application on a building project

Similarly, DE and BIM Head of Department,  Tony Joseph, who had played a key role in many of the MRT project’s innovations, is now taking the lessons learnt into  the  Penang  South Islands (PSI) Project for BIM ISO 19650 standards and deliverables mandated across the entire supply chain, from consultants, subcontractors to even their suppliers.

Penang’s IT and BIM team (top) plus Project Management and QSHE team (bottom),
are all heavy DE and BIM users

“It’s more important than ever to establish a strong Digital Engineering framework, using tools like BIM and Cloud Analytics to achieve the best outcomes,” he added.

Just recently, a digitalisation exercise that started two years back on the KVMRT UG project, converting drawing approvals into automated e-Drawings, had reported over 25,000 submissions registered. Complete with built-in software functions for approval, stamping, commenting, digital signatures and notification,  the move had accelerated collaboration between various parties besides reducing paper and printing-based tasks.

A web-based collaborative markup tool. Imagine how much impact would similar systems bring to a project like PSI, beginning from the drawing board and projected to last decades? The scale of the project alone necessitates a holistic digital engineering approach for effective project management

As Tony said, “Our high-quality  BIM 3D models, compliance to international standards and comprehensive audits has been key to overall increased productivity and savings at the project sites.”

The drive towards BIM ISO 19650 certification

Joyce Shamini

Officially ISO 19650 certified

Just recently,  Gamuda Engineering  earned  its  ISO 19650 Part 1 and Part 2  certification the first time. Internationally recognised, the certification supersedes BIM Level 2 PAS 1192 the  UK’s highest  Building Information Modelling (BIM) compliance standard.

Executive Director of  Gamuda Engineering, Lim Hui Yan congratulated the audited teams. The teams involved were from Gamuda Building Unit  and GAIA Residences of Gamuda Gardens, headed by BIM manager, Aloysies  Arrokiam  Nathan and Senior BIM engineer, Ng Xue Yinn.

Lim Hui Yan (centre) and team receiving the audit certificate at an award ceremony hosted by BSI Malaysia on 2 November 2021 at Gardens Hotel, Mid Valley

With the certification, we are  now in  pole position for jobs that demand rigorous BIM specifications.

Intensifying a BIM culture

Interestingly, GAIA Residences at Gamuda Gardens was one of the earlier buildings projects back in 2017 where BIM was first trialed alongside  Amber Residence from the twentyfive.7 township.  What did it take for these projects to achieve ISO 19650-readiness today?

Before, in BIM rendering and after in actual construction for Amber Residence, twentyfive.7

The pilot of both projects brought the Product Management Unit, Project Management and Contracts and Commercial departments together to  implement BIM for  design and construction.  Despite  the low  BIM readiness of  the supply chain then,  the project teams’ persevered and are finally reaping the benefits of BIM adoption.

BIM renderings of Gamuda Land developments, such as GAIA residences and Maya Bay Residence were featured in this BIM Studio explainer

BIM Manager,  Lydia  Nyomek  shared,  creating a lively BIM culture  required  a  steep change from  past  industry  norms. One example is the  previous practice  of  relying  on consultants heavily to generate 2D drawings and facilitate  design coordination. With BIM and its digital twin system, all parties  can  access the same information independently and play a proactive part in the construction validation process.

Senior BIM M&E Engineer,  Nana  Andrea  added,  “We  learnt  that age wasn’t a barrier and sometimes people just lacked the confidence  to pick up the software skills or have unfounded perceptions of  BIM being technically complicated.”

One of the tens of BIM workshops held by Lydia and the team

“Hence with  regular training, handholding exercises,  and constant technical support to the  team, we overcame these  limiting beliefs  together and saw  significant improvement in BIM  utilisation. It  was gratifying to see  staff  that  had zero BIM knowledge  at first eventually  running  live  BIM presentations to upper management on their own,” Lydia  enthused.

At the linchpin is the BIM committee, an initiative of Gamuda Excellence Transformation under Pillar 4 of Gamuda Green Plan 2025. Headed by experts across various business units such as Aloysies, the BIM committee is charged with driving BIM  excellence  Group-wide for sustainable growth.

Aloysies elaborated, “At the heart of BIM excellence is a PROCESS to ensure good governance of our data and workflows. This enables a much more seamless and productive journey throughout the construction life cycle.”

Top on its list of priorities, the BIM committee strives to standardise Group-wide BIM implementations, develop BIM inspired innovations, conduct vendor evaluations for BIM readiness, and more.
