Acknowledging heroes of tough time

Ruby Chan and Sheena Wong

The annual Star Golden Hearts Award (SGHA) and the coveted Gamuda Inspiration Award (GIA) by Yayasan Gamuda and The Star celebrate selfless Malaysians who demonstrate extraordinary dedication to social and community works.

We have witnessed meaningful outcomes brought by past GIA winners such as Kedai Jalanan, Barefoot Mercy, Umie Aktif, Sujana Mohd Rejab, Seven Tea One and PWD Smart FarmAbility in attending to various community issues. The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic has also brought the best out of Malaysians to help one another better and more impactful ways.

This year, we sustained the momentum of awarding two GIA winners with a grant of RM50,000 each. Suriana Welfare Society (Suriana) and Crisis Relief Services and Training (CREST) were rewarded for their outstanding and inspirational community efforts in improving the lives of others through socio-economic development.

We even doubled the award amount for CREST to a total of RM100,000 to amplify the impact of local and international humanitarian assistance that has helped various communities affected by natural disasters and crises.
